The Acyloin Ester Condensation

The formation of alpha hydroxyketones from carboxylic esters.

Heating of a carboxylic ester with sodium in an inert solvent yields an alhpa-hydroxy ketone by a condensation reaction followed by hydrolytic workup. The mechanism is shown below.
