The Aldol Reaction

The reaction of aldehydes or ketones to give beta-hydroxy carbonyl compounds or alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (the aldol condensation reaction).

The aldol reaction can be catalysed by either acid or base, the former normally leading to the aldol condensation product, the latter to the aldol product.
