New CollegeNew College, despite it's name, is one of the oldest colleges in Oxford, being founded by William of Wickham in 1379. It was intended as a place for people from Winchester School (which Wickham also founded) to continue their education. The College contains the only portion of the City wall which is still standing, and this is inspected by the mayor of the city every five years to ensure that the college is looking after it. The college has good facilities, with a JCR and MCR computer room and a large sports ground, complete with two squash courts and a weights room. The college also has those all important summer accessories, punts. These are ideal for warm summer days when you can convince someone else to punt you down the river to the Victoria Arms ("Vicki Arms") whilst you lie back, drink and sunbathe. And who said that students work hard? |
