French HornI play the French horn (which is of German origin, not to be confused with the cor anglais, which is of course french...), and have done for many years. I have played in many groups over the years, playing in places as far apart as Aberdeen and Monaco. In my first year, along with Paul Ryder and Björn Beckman, I set up a French Horn choir called Oxford University Concert Horns (OUCH for short). We have performed several concerts, both alone and with other groups, as well as playing at dinners and garden parties. Unfortunately, due to a lack of younger members, OUCH has been disbanded. The group was kindly sponsored by Oliver Brockway Music, and our patron was Sir Malcolm Arnold. If you want to buy a French Horn, or accessories, look no further than Paxman's in London (Linton House, 164-180 Union Street, London, SE1 0LH, Tel. (0)20 7620 1688 Workshop. (0)20 7620 1990; nearest station is Waterloo). If they don't have it or can't get it it's probably not worth having! If you're interested in listening to some music, then get in touch with Neuschel Publications (01844 353025). I personally recommend "The London Horn Sound" CD if you want to hear some seriously amazing playing by today's top players. If you want to hear some traditional music I would recommend the Richard Watkins recording of the Glière horn concerto, whilst if you were after something a little unusual you might want to try "Hornolgy" by Arkady Shilkloper or a bit of Jazz with "The Flipside" (Tom Bacon). If you are a horn player and you aren't yet a member, I recommend joining the British Horn Society. For your money you get four issues of "The Horn Magazine" (Published by the Society, exclusively for members, including articles, news, reviews, advertisements and letters of special interest to horn players) a year and a range of discounts on concert tickets and goods.
