Please be careful if you are taking a taxi that they don't take you to the other St Mary's Cathedral, which is located at the other side of Princes Street- many weddings have taken place where the bride and groom were at one church and the bridesmaids were at the other.... If you specify it is the one at the Picardy Place roundabout near the St James' Shopping Centre you should be OK... The Cathedral is located at the East End of Edinburgh city centre near the St. James' Shopping Centre. It is about 2 minutes away from Princes Street. The Cathedral faces the Picardy Place roundabout which is the junction of Broughton Street, York Place, Leith Street and Leith Walk. You can see a map of the area here (opens in new window). The arrow at the centre of the map pinpoints the location of the Cathedral.
To get to Dalhousie Castle from the Cathedral: Due to the one way system, it is better to turn left coming out of the Cathedral onto Leith Street and go right round the roundabout to drive back up the opposite side of Leith Street so that John Lewis is on your right. Go straight ahead at the lights at the top of the hill into North Bridge. This road changes name various times. You will pass the festival theatre on the right. There is a cross road junction with traffic lights at the end of South Clerk Street. The meadows are on your right. Turn left at these lights into East Preston Street. At the set of lights at the top of this hill, turn right onto Dalkeith road. You will pass the Royal Commonwealth pool on your left. This is the A7. Go straight through Cameron Toll roundabout and the road becomes Old Dalkeith Road. You will pass the new Royal infirmary on the left. You will cross the bypass and pass through Lasswade and Newtongrange staying on the A7. You will see a shell garage on your right at a junction. Turn right here along the B704. Dalhousie Castle is located half a mile from the junction on the left. The entrance is on the right and you need to go back underneath the road bridge.
